Like everyone else I suspect, I’m fascinated by this period of history. So, after reading Hilary Mantel and seeing the mesmeric ‘Wolf Hall’ on TV, I embarked on ‘Lamentation’ , C J Sansom’s latest book in his Shardlake series. Once again I was gripped by the characters and all the well-researched incidental details of Tudor life. There was the usual build up of menace and intrigue, so I enjoyed it, but just found it a bit repetitious in summarising once again all the differences in the religious factions jostling for power as Henry v111’s reign came to a close.
However I would love to see the whole series televised, and I can visualise Mark Rylance as a great Shardlake.
